“Galisteo Basin” Landscape

Here’s a painting done mostly on location. The Galisteo Basin is only 10 minutes from my studio. Below the mountain is the small village of Lamy, NM, where the Amtrak train stops at the old station. There’s a shuttle into town, so if you are ever traveling to Santa Fe, be sure to look into Amtrak for an adventure.

Portrait Study of Francesca

Here’s the preliminary poster study and subsequent portrait, painted from life in a few days, of Francesca. I wish I had had the time to finish her. This was painted in the studio of Tony Ryder, here in Santa Fe.

Poster study for portrait.

Small Floral Paintings

These two paintings are only 5×5 inches square. My husband gave me a beautiful vase of white lillies so I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to capture one. They were huge. AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE – Email Kathy.

Meet “Copper” my Studio Mate!

Copper came home with us on Sunday when he was 10 weeks old!  Copper comes from a fine home of drop-dead gorgeous RED standard poodles.  Already, he is so smart and has found his way around the house, the yard and … Snickers, our cat. They aren’t best friends (yet) but they do respect one another’s territory.

Copper gets his studio tour this week and he has his own playpen in there. I will let him up on the loveseat, because I feel he will make a great model in the future. A poodle in repose.

So no painting this week, it’s all about the puppy. Probably no painting next week either, hehe…   It’s great having him join our family.  Stay tuned for more “Copper” news in the near future.

Going to work in the studio.

Hello, I'm Copper.

Beautiful face - those eyes will charm you!

I like gnawing on carrots.

Landscape Painting in Taos

Last week was spent in Taos, NM painting outdoors. What a different and challenging experience for me, as I work exclusively from life in the studio. The “doing” really freed me up and although the heat sapped my energy, at the end of the day, I was fulfilled by the activity of painting pictures so quickly. The group was totally fun and supportive – wonderful artists who were able to enjoy one another’s company in every scenario.

Here are a few of the 3 hour sketches we did on location:

Self Portrait

This study in oil (on panel) was initially created so I could finish another portrait from long ago when I was in school. Our skin coloring is similar.
It was a comedy at times because I wore this goofy grin and had to keep putting on and taking off my glasses. Also lighting, as in any painting, was really important and in the beginning light was reflecting off the mirror right into my eyes which I didn’t notice until really getting down to the business of painting. You’d think I had learned by now. So, I rearranged the easel and mirror and painted over what was already there.
It was really fun to paint all in all!
